Books are life
“No two persons ever read the same book”quoted by Edmund Wilson. This is one of my favorite quotes because, it means that even if two people read a book with the same title, both will take a different message from it. Many books do not just have one life lesson but several, in many situations that the audience is left to decide the meaning for themselves. For instance, my favorite book is The Great Gatsby because I think it has important messages, but others do not always see it that way nor see the same messages that I do. Whether or not a reader likes The Great Gatsby, I believe it has had a huge impact on my outlook on life and it is by far my favorite book.
Surprisingly enough, the book is not about Gatsby, while he is a main character, he is not the character that the reader sees things from. Many readers’ favorite character is Nick or Daisy and some, like myself, fancy Gatsby. Jay Gatsby was a young millionaire who acquired his fortune for the purpose of getting closer to Daisy. Most of Gatsby’s life was spent trying to reconnect with his first true love, Daisy. Gatsby believed that no matter what happens or where a person began; they should never stop chasing their dreams. Gatsby was Nick’s only friend and would do anything for him. While yes, Gatsby was rich due to many illegal businesses, he was a great guy, and realized that life is more about friends and loved ones than money.
People who have read any of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work will know that he comes up with some beautiful quotes. In terms of Great Gatsby, my favorite quote is one from near the end of the book: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” To me the quote is saying that our pasts will always try to keep us from moving ahead in anything, but we have to keep going and push through forever so that we may succeed in life and love. While the quote was said by Nick Carraway, the narrator, I believe that Gatsby himself would have said something similar because he truly believed that our pasts cannot keep us from anything.
There is no denying the fact that The Great Gatsby is a wonderful piece of literature. For me, the book has had a bigger effect on me than just being a good book. The Great Gatsby’s quotes and lessons have helped shape my life and motivate me to pursue my dreams no matter what. Even if another reader may not like the book; I personally believe it has aided me in life.
